Common Phrases in English
Alright, I will introduce common phrases in English, provide definitions, and share how I used them in the previous episodes.
One-Sided
Sometimes the word networking makes people think of something sleazy or one-sided, so I try to help people understand that it’s making connections with real people.
Definition: Unfairly giving attention to one side of an issue or argument.
Hold One Back
I can see how people’s perceptions about networking might hold them back from trying it out.
Definition: To impede the progress of something or someone.
Nowadays
We can’t talk about networking nowadays without talking about LinkedIn.
Definition: At the present time, as opposed to in the past.
Face to Face
The internet has offered us these opportunities to connect with people without being face to face.
Definition: To be physically close to and facing another person.
Chit-Chat
We don’t stop at the water cooler and chit-chat with anyone, so we have to be more intentional about it.
Definition: To talk about trivial matters. It’s a light conversation that could include small talk or gossip.

Definition: This idiom indicates that something surprising has happened. It can be used seriously or sarcastically, depending on the tone.
Rando
They’re not going to want to talk to some rando on the internet.
Definition: An informal phrase meaning a random person or a stranger.
Short and Sweet
It all starts with that first short and sweet message.
Definition: When something is brief and pleasant. This phrase is often used regarding communication, like an email or phone call. It is also used to describe something like the length of a meeting.
Follow-Up
One place that people often fall short when they’re networking is they don’t follow up.
Definition: A continuation, or repetition, of something that has already been done.
Short-Sighted
Americans can sometimes be short-sighted in building relationships.
Definition: Doing something without thinking about its future impact.

Accent Modification Coaching Available
Did you know I help people communicate more effectively in English through accent modification training? Accent modification isn’t about removing a person’s accent. Instead, it’s about helping them achieve easy-to-understand speech, so they connect well with others.
After an assessment, we may cover mouth positioning, tone of voice, articulation, intonation, word stress, or linking.
I provide my Speech Coaching service in the General American English accent (also known as the Standard American Accent), which is a neutral and widely-spoken version of American English.
I received extensive training in classical singing, which involved learning to sing in many languages, and I believe it’s what sets me apart as an accent modification coach.
English Learning Homework
Learning takes repetition and implementation. So, I’ll give you some homework! Listen to this episode again and repeat the words out loud to practice. It will not only expand your English vocabulary but help you to improve your American English pronunciation, listening skills, and intonation. You’ll be doing the Shadowing Technique! If you need a reminder about implementing the Shadowing Technique, check out my episode, Introducing the Shadowing Technique for English Learning.
