Now, let’s begin!
Before we get started, I thought some of you might be wondering, “what is an idiom?” An idiom is a common expression that means something different from the literal meaning of the words. Sometimes it’s called an idiomatic expression. Since it’s not logical to deduce the meaning of the grouped words, I like to define idioms for English language learners. On the other hand, a phrase is a group of words used to define an expression and can be taken literally. Alright, let’s learn some phrases and idioms!
List of Idioms and Phrases
Heart of the Matter
Then, I probe further to get to the heart of the matter.
The heart of the matter means the most important element of an issue or matter at hand.
Spell (it) Out
Employers also don’t know that what you’ve done is impressive unless you spell it out for them.
When you spell something out, you present the details of something to make it clear to understand.
Put Yourself in Someone’s Shoes
For the story section of the episode, I’d like to help you put yourself in the shoes of an employer or recruiter.
This phrase means to imagine yourself in another person’s situation, so you can empathize with their perspective.
Cream of the Crop
These resumes are the cream of the crop because they earned high match rates in the company’s applicant tracking system.
Cream of the crop means the best of a group of people or things.
For a longer explanation of the idiom “Cream of the Crop,” I highly recommend the Voice of America article, Why is ‘Cream of the Crop’ the Best of the Best?, which is available in the “Words and their Stories” section. You can listen to or read the short article. I strongly recommend Voice of America’s Learning English website for all language learners!
Crystal Clear
As a result, you will have a crystal clear understanding of what information you need to gather and add to your resume.
Crystal clear means perfectly clear and easy to understand.
Alright, that’s all of the new vocabulary words for this episode. I encourage you to start this list of idioms and phrases today!

English Learning Homework
Learning takes repetition and implementation. So, I’ll give you some homework! Listen to this episode again and repeat the words out loud to practice. It will not only expand your English vocabulary but help you to improve your American English pronunciation, listening skills, and intonation. You’ll be doing the Shadowing Technique! If you need a reminder about implementing the Shadowing Technique, check out episode 15, Introducing the Shadowing Technique for English Learning.
