New Idioms and Phrases in English
Alright, I will introduce new idioms and phrases in English, provide definitions, and share how I used them in the previous episodes.
Sum Up (Terri)
Phrase
So I guess that sums up who I am today, but it probably doesn’t sum up all of me because I wasn’t always a coach and a trainer, and I wasn’t always involved with this work on vulnerability.
Definition: To summarize, or describe concisely.
Spark (One’s) Interest (Kristine)
Idiom
Could you tell me more about what sparked your interest in these topics?
Definition: To make someone feel interested or hopeful.
Lean Into (Terri)
Phrase
I think leaning into vulnerability is the right phrase because it implies leaving off any of the shiny polished armor that we put on to try to look anything other than our authentic selves, right?
Definition: To pursue some task or activity with great effort, determination, and perseverance.
Trip (You) Up (Terri)
Phrase
Professionally, ones that definitely tripped you up but that you learned a lesson from.
Definition: To make, or cause to make a mistake.
Flub (Terri)
Idiom
It doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong, and it doesn’t mean that you’re flubbing the interview.
Definition: To botch, bungle, or do something badly.
To Throw (One’s) Hat Into The Ring (Terri)
Idiom
What was it about that job description that got you excited enough to throw your hat into the ring?
Definition: To announce that one will be competing against others.
Track Record (Terri)
Phrase
You can look at my track record.
Definition: The past achievements or performance of a person, organization, or product.
To Nail Something (Kristine)
Idiom
It sounds like she nailed it, and I’m so happy to hear that she’s achieving her goals because of it.
Definition: To do something successfully, or flawlessly.
